Today was a great day for our group! We were able to spend time outside in the gardens at Castle Howard in York, while discussing Arcadia, ALL in great weather!

We began our daily adventure with an hour long bus ride to get to Castle Howard! For those of you who don’t know, Castle Howard is a country house which has many similarities as Arcadia, that Lizzy further informed us about today! One of the places we focused on discussion was in the beautiful blooming gardens located around the Castle. Pictured below is just one of the unlimited kinds of flowers among the gardens along with the location of the garden that we sat at for part of our discussion of Arcadia! 🙂IMG_0126 IMG_0117

After we toured the many gardens, we made our way to the Castle where we spent roughly an hour touring around the West wing. Simon Howard, who is the current resident at the Castle, lives with his family in the East wing! He is one of the 11 generations to live in the Castle over the years! We learned a lot of things about the history of the family, as well as the history of the Castle itself. The furniture is nearly all original dating from the 17-1800’s. The Castle began to be built in 1699 and took over 100 years to complete which shows how extravagant and amazing it is! We visited many rooms including the Brideshead room which included a long table, similar to one that would be used in a performance of Arcadia!

As we made our way out of the historic Castle, we finished up our discussion of the play outside in the sunny weather! We went into further detail of the relationship with nature and how it is untouched by time. Nature is beautiful and youthful! One of the main topics we discussed was to see the bigger picture and to see the beauty in everything and we clearly discovered that in both the gardens and Castle today! We had some time after the discussion to travel around the site! On our way out, we even got to see a peacock!

Once we arrived back into York off the bus, we got to walk the city walls! It then began to rain, but we were still able to have a great view over the town as we walked above and around! We ended our evening together by visiting the shambles which is full of history! It was a great day to see the astonishing beauty of England and we look forward to the rest of our time here!
